The Big Bang
there are 3 types of galaxies elliptical, irregular and spiral this will be dedicated to the differences between them.
the different types of galaxies
Elliptical galaxies are more egg or oval shaped than the other types of galaxies from our planet we will only be able to see 2 of their 3 dimensions. Their light is smooth and its luminosity decreases the farther you get from the center. They are given a classification based on how much of an oval shape they have called ellipticity the higher the number of their ellipticity is the more oval shaped they are. For example E0 will be a perfect circle and E5 will be more of an oval. They have no axis of rotation but always remember the word oval its the easiest way to describe it.
Now on to spiral galaxies so Spiral galaxies have three main parts nucleus,Disk, and Halo
The nucleus is the spherical structure in the middle of the galaxy. The disk is made up of dust, gas, and younger stars. The disk forms are arm structures for an example our sun is in our arm structure the halo of a galaxy is a loose, spherical structure located near the nucleus. The halo contains old stars called globular clusters. There are two classifications of spiral galaxies they are ordinary and barred. ordinary galaxies can be simplified as SA and barred galaxies are SB. In a SA galaxy the arms originate from the nucleus which is different from SB galaxies there is a bar of material that runs through the nucleus that the arms spiral out of. It doesn't matter barred or original there is a classification for the tightness that the arms are woven with a,b,c ,and d with a being the tightness and d being the loosest.
So I lied there is technically there are 4 types but this galaxy is very simple and not well know or common. This will be about S0 galaxies which aren't very complicated as long as you understand what was said in the previous paragraphs. S0 galaxies are an intermediate between E7 and true spiral SA they aren't elliptical because they have a nucleus and a disk but they aren't SA because they aren't spiral in nature. S0 galaxies can be called lenticular galaxies.
Irregular galaxies have no regular or symmetrical structure they are categorized with two things Irr 1 and Irr 2 (very clever). Irr 1 galaxies have HII sections which are regions of elemental hydrogen gas and many population I stars which are just young hot stars. Irr 2 galaxies have lots of dust that block most of the star light in the galaxy all of the dust makes it impossible to see distant stars in this galaxy.
